Sole Hope Project
Bring one or more pair of used jeans to campus beginning Friday, February 9. We will collect recycled jeans from February 9 through February 22. Donated jeans should be clean. You can drop off your jeans at the library, the bookstore, the Office of Student Life, the Honors College or your division office. #SoleHopeRichland http://solehope.org/
You can also volunteer to participate at one of our Shoe Cutting Parties:
Thursday, February 23 from 8 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. – Richland Cafeteria
Friday, February 24 from 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. – Richland Cafeteria
The RCHS, The Honors Program and a number of RLC student clubs are partnering in a unique Service Learning Project to address a serious health threat to children in Uganda, Africa. More than 300 million children around the globe have never worn a pair of shoes. In the country of Uganda, painful soil parasites, called jiggers, embed themselves in children’s feet. Jiggers, left untreated, cause infections, paralysis, and even amputation.
To address this problem, we are partnering with Sole Hope International to make children’s shoes from recycled jeans and tire tread.
The jean upper part of the shoes will be cut by RLC students, staff, and faculty volunteers here at Richland and shipped to Uganda. The shoes will then be assembled and finished by Ugandans who need a sustainable income to provide for their families. Sole Hope will distribute these shoes FREE to children as part of a comprehensive health and sustainability plan for local Ugandan villages.
